Today, eventhough medical sciences
have advanced a lot but the reduced physical activities among the school students
are making them obese and prone to cardiovascular diseases. In this context,
there was another milestone in the MZIS campus when the students were fortunate
to be addressed by leading heart specialist, Dr. Arun Chockalingam, MS, PhD, FACC,
FAHA, Director, Office of Global Health, University of Toronto, Canada on the
topic How to keep your heart healthy for
a long and lead a cheerful life.

The
programme started with a prayer to thank Almighty who gave us this wonderful
opportunity. Dr. Jonathan Jayabharathan, Director welcomed the distinguished
Chief Guest, Dr. Arun Chockalingam, by introducing and highlighting his
achievements. The Director expressed his happiness as the Chief Guest, Dr. Arun
Chockalingam from Toronto was addressing the school students for the first time
and as he has always addressed Doctor’s around the globe. He also welcomed, Dr.
Gopukumar, Senior Principal Scientist, CECRI, Karaikudi who came along with the
distinguished guest. Dr. Jonathan Jayabharathan expressed his happiness to Dr.
Arun Chockalingam for accepting the invitation in spite of his busy schedule.
Mr. Jayabharathan Chelliah, Chairman, Mount Zion Educational Institutions
delivered the Presidential address and urged the students to take care of their
health, a gift given by God. He also honoured the Chief Guest with a gild shawl
and Director Dr Jonathan Jayabharathan presented a memento.
The
Chief Guest was welcomed by the students with a classical welcome dance and a
melody on health and Fitness. This was followed by an illuminating and lively
inspiring speech by the Chief Guest on Eat
Right and Stay Fit and educated the audience on various topics viz., “The
Functions of Heart”, “Adverse Effects of practicing bad habits”, “Uses on being
active”, “Doing exercise”, and “The role of proper diet”.
He
advocated on eating healthy practice on foods especially vegetables and fruits
by being active, perform many group activities, create awareness on smoke-free
environment, watch the weight, love neighbours (all) as these in turn keeps
one’s heart healthy. He concluded with a quote, ie., “Healthy Heart makes you
healthy and happy”. A volley of questions was put up by the students and he
clarified their doubts.
Finally,
Associate Director Mrs. Angeline Jonathan, delivered the vote of thanks to the
audience in the presence of Director Dr Jonathan and Principal Dr Jalajakumari.
The programme culminated with the National Anthem.
